2011 senior Tessa is a cheerleader and volleyball player at Forest City High School in Forest City, IA. She had tons of awesome outfits and ideas to make her senior session unique, creative and fun. We started off shooting Sunday afternoon at the Central Gardens in Clear Lake, IA which is the perfect location for some awesome summer shots.

A shot behind the scenes of Tanner. We had some great family members along on the shoot to help us out with lighting.

They had a great spot at the garden just a few feet over that added for an entirely different look and feel.

Possibly my favorite shot of the day

Tanner shot this next one with our new lens the Canon 28mm f/1.8. Its a great little lens and so far fits in perfectly with our other prime lineup!

On the way out of the garden the light was just perfect under a tree at the garden gates so we snapped a few photos here as well.

Next we were off to another location. We found this spot a few months ago and thought it would be perfect for some fun Volleyball outfit shots. Tessa is a libero on the Forest City High School volleyball team or defensive specialist for those of you non volleyball players out there. She hopes to continue her volleyball career through college.

At the Rupe wedding in the end of June the limo accidentally turned down a dead end road and we discovered this great bridge! We were so excited to bring Tessa here to shoot.

Tessa had such a fun little outfit picked out! Loved the top hat!

Just as we were packing up to head off to the last location of the day a marvelous thing happened…a train decided to pass!

We hurried to setup.

For this for those of you geeky people out there we had a long exposure with our camera at f/22 on a tripod, 580 exII in a soft-box to the right and hand-held bare 580exII to the left both at 1/1 or full power triggered with pocket wizard plus II’s. Couldn’t be happier about the results!

Shot below was a complete accident. We were testing the light (bit bright) and Tessa was testing how close she could get to the 15mm f/2.8 fish-eye. Turned out amusing so I just had to post it.

Last stop was a warehouse in Mason City that we’ve shot at a few times before but decided it would be wonderful to utilize some of the things there that we haven’t before.

They had this wonderful grungy fence that was the perfect backdrop for some formal photos with one of her favorite dresses. These are shot with the 28mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.4 and 135 f/2L.

The sun was setting as Tessa put on an orange romper as her second to last outfit. We thought it would be great to move into the street as there were no cars passing by and get get the lights from the stoplight in the background bokeh. Most of these were shot with a 135L wide open and the 28 f/1.8.

Lastly we finished up Tessa’s senior session with some cheer-leading shots.

Have a wonderful senior year Tessa and thanks for letting us shoot your senior pictures!

We love to do the non-traditional shots at ever senior session with trying something new and unique with each senior. Whether it is a variety of fun locations that they help us pick out, or some different lighting setups, seniors are so much fun to work with and shoot! Their creativity and spirit never cease to amaze me. It is such a great time in their lives as their last year living at home before embarking on their college journey, and it’s great to enjoy it and capture them at that point in life.

Of course we end up with a plethora of traditional ‘yearbook’ and formal shots as well, but really we want our seniors to have a few fun photos that really let their personality and uniqueness shine through.

Just by chance we happened to catch a train passing by a location we were shooting with a senior Sunday night. Tanner jumped at the chance to do a fun long exposure with the train in the background so we scrambled to set up.

For the photo nerds out there:

15mm f/2.8 Fisheye
-100 ISO
-1/4 sec
-F/22
-2 580 EXII’s at 1/1 (triggered with pocket wizzard plus II’s)

Tanner spent about 2 hours editing out the shadows from us and the tripod in the photo. I will post a full Tessa senior pic preview hopefully sometime this week including some awesome cheerleading jumps, a fun sparkly formal dress, some top-hat photos, and some great volleyball shots!
