I’ve had this written and the pictures taken for well over a month but here it goes! I love reading blogs about what photographers shoot with, we often snoop in Flickr in the details of photos to see the settings the photo was taken at, and overall it is just plain fun to see what equipment others use to produce their work!
We love lenses! They each have their own purpose and seems at times personality. I just thought it would be fun to do a little post about what Tanner and I shoot with to give you an idea of how we work and why we have each lens.
That being said here is what we shoot with currently as of April of 2010.
And onto the equipment!
This isn’t everything we have as stated above and below but most of it!
Our Cameras
Tanner and I both shoot with 21.1 megapixel full frame Canon 5D Mark II’s. They can shoot 1080 HD video and just plain are amazing! Upgrading from a 40D my life has gone crazy with full frame! I’ll never go back! For those of you who are serious about a camera or shooting weddings I’d recommend grabbing up a 5D or a 5D mk II. If your into sports and action shots I’d recommend looking at a 7D. (As for you Nikoners I know nothing. Sorry!)
We both also have battery grips and an extra battery allowing us to shoot all day at a wedding with lots of extra battery to spare! Overall they just add a bit more to grab onto, some don’t like the added weight but we love them.
Lenses
14mm F/2.8
-ULTRA wide on a full frame camera! Love this lens!
15mm F/2.8 Fisheye
-Adds a funky edge to those super wide shots.
50mm F/1.4
-Hopefully upgrading to a 50mm F/1.2L here in the next year or so but for now this lens produces great portraits! Probably my favorite non-ultra wide lens!
100mm f/2.8 macro (Pic to come! Just purchased!)
-For those fun macro ring shots!
85mm F/1.8
-This lens is great for portraits and sports! We often shoot couples with this as well as basketball games where we are able to get extremely close. The low F is great for indoor lighting!
24-105L F/4
-This lens came with one of our 5d MK II camera’s and instantly thought we would sell it for a 50mmL 1.2 or a 35mmL so far it has stuck around! It produces great portraits outside and in the studio! We shall see how much longer it sticks around…probably until I get bored and decide I really do want that 50mm 1.2!
For those of you that don’t know L means the lens is a top of the line lenses made by Canon with ultra-low dispersion UD glass. In other words they are a tad bit more expensive, super sharp, and pretty much kickin-butt. Most of them are also weather sealed and just plain pretty! To me L stands for Love. Right? 😉
135L F/2
-This lens ROCKS. Seriously. It is a crazy little booger! Awesome for sports pictures, great for portraits. Just all around crazy sharp!
70-200L F/2.8
-Since we JUST purchased this three weekends ago haven’t had a chance to play yet! This lens will be fun for portraits, sports and wedding ceremonies. Can’t wait to try it out as so many people say that it is their favorite lens hands down! We will also be looking into a 200mm f/2.8 as well…oh rock on primes!
Lensbaby Composer
This little booger is just for fun! You can swap out the F/stops and create some fun pictures with a bit of edge. Don’t really use it much but it has some fun shots every once in awhile!
We have a few other lenses that we don’t ever use, basically they just sit on the shelf and came with old film cameras or inherited them such as the 20-30mm, two 75-300mm’s and 18-55 (what a pos really..ha! I used to love that thing on my Rebel years ago!) and a few 28-70’s. Really probably could part with them but they aren’t worth anything to sell so they can just sit there and look pretty for the time being!
Flash
We have two 580 EX II’s. We use rechargeable batteries just an FYI for those photogs out there join Costco for the hookup on super awesome memory cards and battery deals! We will probably invest in a few Alien Bee lights before summer wedding season hits too! We love lights!
4 PW Plus II’s
These allow us to shoot off camera flash with a soft box on a light stand and use two off camera flashes for some fun light pics! We also have a transmitter but the pocket wizards work SO much better and are more reliable!
We also have TONS of 8gb memory cards! I think what…8 or 9 cards now? Probably invest in a few more after shooting in RAW with 22 megapixel cameras gets us about 240 pictures PER 8 gb card! That is HUGE! 🙂 For processing reasons we’ve been shooting in sRaw for most of our stuff lately.
Thanks for checking out our stuff! I know that I always love to look at other photographers posts about what equipment they use and what they love about it. Hope you enjoyed!
Love this post!!! It is so helpful!! I have been playing with my new Canon 7D and loving it! I love how fast it takes the picture. I can actually catch all the faces the girls and Bryce make without having to wait for my dang camera to catch up!!!
